Food and Vine

The "Verdicchio"

The production area of the Verdicchio di Matelica includes the heart of the Alta Valle dellÕEsino, which is bounded by mount San Vicino (eastwards), the mount Catria range (westwards) and the Sibillini mountains (southwards) all surrounded by the Esino River. The north-south direction of this valley, as opposed to the other valleys in the region all laying east-west towards the sea, and the peculiar distribution of the mountain ranges generate favourable climatic conditions for vine growing. The vine lands are not very fertile, but a regular and steady rainfall waters them during the year. The excellent exposure of the vine to mild temperatures, the steady winnowing, the light and heat of the sun produce a favourable habitat for the vine vegetative cycle.

The final result is a grape, which is rich in organic components. The Verdicchio di Matelica must be obtained from grapes of the Verdicchio vine, even if grapes of the Trebbiano and Malvasia vines can also be used in a quantity not exceeding 15% of the whole production. The local bunch is cone and cylindrical-shaped and carries midsize grapes with a thin and yellowish peel; furthermore it is different from the "iesino" bunch that is shut.

Characteristics:
Bouquet: Sweet, delicate with a fresh and robust fragrance of apple, hawthorn and broom;
Taste: Dry and fresh with an after taste of almonds;
Appearance: Clear, light straw yellow colour with greenish reflections;
Alcoholic content: Minimum total: 11,5%.
Total acidity from 0,5 to 0,8 per cent.

This wine can be served with a variety of dishes and it is greatly appreciated as a sparkling wine or an aperitif. Excellent with cold starters, with strong flavoured fish dishes and sauces, fish pasta courses and seafood risotto. It also can be tasted with other typical produce such as the ÒpecorinoÓ or local confectionery.
